Well, while that could be a lot of fun, I doubt it would help me.

Well, I dropped the plugin code, and used pulseaudio as a "normal
client".

I did some experiments with ALSA, and it looks like hardware can not
do 8000Hz/mono, but can only do 8000Hz/stereo...?
