Actually, it is quite a substantial amount of work for us to forward the bug
reports upstream.

At any rate, I think you can keep your habits of using the Debian Bug
Tracking to keep track of your bug reports.  However, if you wish to help us
(we always appreciate volunteer help, BTW), you could manipulate the bugs by
both tagging them "upstream" and forwarding them upstream.  The instructions
for doing this are in the BTS web site [1].  In a nutshell, you can do this
by sending a message like this (e.g. for Bug#492224):

The magic is done by the mail interface at control at bugs.debian.org.

After the bug appears in the bug at octave.org mailing list, you can note in
the BTS where it appears, by using the bts command (apt-get install
devscripts):

    $ bts forwarded 492224 http://www.cae.wisc.edu/pipermail/bug-octave/2008-July/nnnnnn.html

by replacing nnnnnn.html by the appropriate page name.

This will really, really help us.
