Maybe my wording was sloppy. Configure uses inputs, such as configure.ac as
well as various .m4 files to create a file configure. Automake create
Makefiles.in from Makefile.am, the Makefile.in is then used by configure. So
I was sloppy. What I was trying to get at was that rather than having one
undecipherable and HUGE 3+ mb file, we should have a more parsimonious and
compact patch in one of the other files of the autoconf/automake/auto*
toolchain, eg configure.
