[php-maint] Changing php function behaviour in Debian revisions

Hello PHP maintainers,

Let me start by saying that I think you do a great job; PHP in Debian
seems to be very well maintained. Thanks for that.

There's one issue I'd like to draw your attention to though. The current
version in sarge changed the behaviour of at least one function
(chunk_split) between two Debian revisions. This caused a nasty bug in
SquirrelMail in stable, breaking attaching of multiple files. This was
introduced in 4:4.3.10-10:
   * Update to 200503131325 CVS (AKA: 4.3.11RC1), fixing several bugs
     including a segfault in mysql_fetch_field() (closes: #299608)

My request is the following:

a) When updating to a release candidate, please change the package
version number. 4.3.11RC1 is probably a lot more similar to 4.3.11 than
it is to 4.3.10, so the package version should reflect this as good as
possible.

b) Please don't change function behaviour between Debian revisions. It's
difficult enough that PHP seems to change behaviour between minor PHP
versions (4.3.10 and 4.3.11) but Debian changing between its own
revisions (4.3.10-9 and 4.3.10-10), (and for no appearent reason?) makes
the problem even more difficult to deal with.

Thanks in advance for your consideration.

regards,
Thijs Kinkhorst
