This did not work.  They are still there.  However, aptitude removed a 
large number of files it claimed were unused, though one (kpdf) I use 
on a daily basis, and so I have had to re-install it.  I'm not sure 
about the others, so I'll have to check and see what else is borked.  
Running apt-get -f install worked - the timestamps match up now, and 
php seems to be working.

I've never used that, and I guess I don't need to try - this time.  
Useful for future emergencies.
