my guess is that it was changed for some reason, but i couldn't tell you why 
off the top of my head.  i guess taking a look through the changelog/VCS 
might and archived bugs might give a hint.  maybe it had something to do with 
the software wanting to handle expiring sessions on its own or conflicting 
with php's session cleanup or something?
