Hi Sean,

it's not my work, but I'm waiting for this component to get into unstable.
Am I supposed to upload it somewhere and ask for sponsorship, without being the maintainer?

sure, though there's an informal procedure for doing so.  please put the source package somewhere it can be fetched by a sponsor/uploader and then ask for it to be sponsored/uploaded.  to increase the likelihood of sponsorship you should also cc debian-mentors, as most of the folks on this list are quite busy.
