I had the same problem today, but then I discovered that I just ran
out of disc space (it needed about 300 MB then...).  After some moving
around, it worked then. I use a current unstable. It's probably not
the same error (that would be too much of a coincidende), just a funny
story.

Does the log say anything useful?
