I just finished reading it the first time. This already is a great
work, Oliver! I noticed some issues and some questions arose, but I
have to read this in detail a second time tomorrow; I'm quite tired
today.

AFAICS the new architecture is very nice, but will involve major
changes. With regard to the near Sarge release and Steve's appeal to
freeze the current package [1], it seems quite an enormous task to get
this into Sarge and test it properly. But Oliver certainly has a
better feeling for how much work would be involved with this.

Oliver, do you already have a plan to put this into operation, i. e.
when should what be done by whom? I'm currently not sure how to
proceed. For my sake I would take responsibility of the currently
existing bugs that don't affect upgrading issues since much of the
current packaging stuff can (hopefully) be reused in the new
architecture. But if you really want to push the parallel versions
into sarge then maybe you want help with it after the initial
structure is settled?
