It will take a lot of effort to do it, but I'm not at all confident that
sarge is near a general freeze. The installer isn't ready, and until it
is there is no hope of a release.

We know that the postgresql package itself is OK, so it is only (TM) the
control structure that needs building.

Steve's appeal is to avoid new uploads until the current packages are
through to testing. I'm OK with that, because it will take some time to
make these packages. At the moment, postgresql is waiting for perl,
which is waiting for glibc -

The first change will be to create dummy postgresql and
postgresql-client packages, that will depend on postgresql-7.3 and
postgresql-client-7.3. When new upstream releases go into debian, those
dependencies will be upgraded; this will ensure that people
automatically get the new versions of postgresql. postgresql-common
will depend on postgresql and the versioned packages on
postgresql-common.

It would be most helpful if people can deal with existing bugs until the
structure is in place and then help debug the new structure.

However, i don't want to get into it until I'm happy that the design is
OK.
