Thank you for the lively discussion on this matter that failed to send 
copies to me. :-)

I think I will use user postgres:postgres for now, so that it doesn't 
make things more complicated.  It can easily be changed to something 
like pgpool:postgres later on.  If you plan to make /var/run/postgresql 
group writable, let me know, so I can adjust pgpool to keep the 
permissions consistent.  But honestly, it sounds like more trouble than 
it's worth.

I will keep a separate port by default.  A straw poll around the office 
indicates that as the preference.  Also, automatic cross-package 
configuration file editing sounds like a nightmare.

pgpool does not depend on postgresql, but there is a suggestion.
