Indeed, this was very recently changed in Ubuntu quantal which now
defaults back to not exporting *FLAGS in the environment and hence to
make.

I don't think it hurts to filter out this flag out of LDFLAGS in case
it's present, but it's not going to break the build in the latest Ubuntu
release anymore (only in backports).
