I am not so sure the problem is font related.  I experience this, and do
not futz with the "guifont" setting.

Here's my .vimrc:

set lcs=3Dtab:=EF=BF=BD=EF=BF=BD,trail:=EF=BF=BD

I can reproduce the problem even if I move my .vimrc out of the way.

I do not have a .gvimrc.

If this bug is provoked by a configuration setting, it must be a stock Vim
setting that is doing it.
