When you run gvim, it forks itself to release control back to the
application that started it (e.g., so you can still use the terminal).
Since the problem is happening in the fork, that would explain why
you're seeing this with gvim.  You're right that I was just using
vim-gtk in the terminal when I did the testing before reporting #612998.
