the kernel modules were not compatible with the kernel build
infrastructure (which is called kbuild too) about 10 months ago. That
is why the patch was needed. The $(KDIR) variable is set by the
kernel, please see .../Documentation/kbuild/modules.txt for more
information. VirtualBox became compatible with the kernel build
infrastructure and my patch might be obsolete: if the module builds
without the patch you don't need it.
