They are downloaded automatically when trying to install them from the
GUI (they are downloaded from Innotek website and saved - by default -
in ~/.VirtualBox/ as VBoxGuestAdditions_1.5.2.iso for the current
version in Debian unstable)

Nothing at all, just using ;-)

In the meantime, I have tested more recent distros, like latest Ubuntu
and OpenSuse, and all work fine with the guest additions installed, I
would thus say this issue is particular to Fedora 8, but still a bug in
VirtualBox.
