wrong, they are required.

basically, your problem seems to be that using debian tools to manage
kernel modules for non-.deb packaged kernels fails. guess what, that is
indeed of no interest at all.

if you don't use dpkg to manage kernels, you can't use it for modules
either. that's why you shall read README.Debian in the
/usr/share/doc/$module-source/. you can install modules from source by
calling make in /usr/src/modules/$module/ approriately.
