I didn't notice the bpo version when I filed the bug, sorry.

I forgot that I installed VirtualBox from backports, it solved an issue 
I had but right now don't remember what was. As I downloaded and 
installed the .deb packages manually, I stuck with this now outdated 
version.

I manually downloaded the current backports version (for a quick fix) 
and found that this version never destroys the differencing image. So, 
although the original .vdi file seems unaltered, after a off-on cycle 
it preserved the HD changes from the previous session with no obvious 
way to roll back the VM to the immutable state, maybe deleting the 
differencing image will do but I didn't tested it yet.

Noted. Maybe I'll try the manual download-and-install from Lenny or 
Squeeze. I know it's not the way, but I managed to mess up things so 
far that is worth trying before downgrading to the old 1.6 stable 
version if things go awfully wrong.
