Apologies, I do not know where some of my emails are going to, either it is a 
severe case of PEBCAK (as I've recently changed email clients) or my ISP's 
account is just too lame.

The SSID is not used as an identification value, only the id_str value is 
(which is a simple sting). Therefore, when properly setup, stupid characters 
in an ssid will not interfere.

I mentioned SSID before only as an example of what the supplicant already 
knows about the network.
