IRC channel for the group?

Nothing wrong with mailing lists.  Instant messaging and email serve
different needs, where there former will often be used for communication
that is less formal and with less overhead than email.  It is like
talking to someone in the hallway compared to sending them a letter.
The barrier to getting started is lower and the range of topics one is
willing to bring us is wider. :)

But do not get me wrong.  I am perfectly comfortable with your view on
avoiding the time sink that instant messaging can be.

But unless someone want another IRC channel, I say we use #xiph for our
group here.  It will most likely block our ability to have IRC messages
every time our git repos change (doubt that would be welcome on #xiph
for the people already there), but I suspect we can live without it. :)
