It's widely installed because it's a dependency of several common media
playback stacks, but files which actually exercise the code aren't
common, so the actual implications for dropping support aren't as
serious as popularity contest suggests.
Otherwise, I don't have much of an opinion. If it's not being maintained
dropping it from debian makes sense. If someone does still depend on it,
that may inspire them to take on maintainership. If not, then there's
one less piece of unmaintained software.
