have you considered the possibility that a slightly less very narrow 
focus could make things less brittle?

or that an effort to fix an old and pushed-beyond-its-limits system 
might be more productivly spent on refactoring and getting rid of 
artificial limitations?

while not the quickest way to get started, it could be a good idea to 
step back and think/talk about means and goals. allow a fixed time (5 
days?) to explain what is to be done, and why, before doing it.
