Do you refer to the `splashy_config -i` function (create a theme, the
interactive way) ?
If yes, the font file asked at this point is the path (not absolute) to
a font file (*.ttf) which will be copied to the new theme directory then
used by splashy to draw the text.

Thanks to report this bug. It'll be corrected.

The splashy init script send "exit" to splashy to stop it, so it should
work.
Do you exec `splashy_update exit` or `/sbin/splashy_update exit` ?
Try the second one, the PATH might not be set at this point.
