I'm assuming you got the development Splashy package for Gutsy from:
http://splashy.alioth.debian.org/ubuntu/

Right? If that's the case, then you should just install the package
and add to your menu.lst:

vga=791 splash

Then remove usplash (which conflicts with the package anyway).

You should do NO more changes and everything will just magically work.
Splashy is supposed to run from initramfs and the Gutsy package I
built does this for you.

This is fine. That's all you need to do.

There is no need to install the libdirectfb packages.

Please do not disable Splashy from initramfs. We have already fixed that bug.

You cannot run Splashy while X is running. In addition, you need to
reboot your system so that your vesafb gets initialized correctly by
the kernel.
