I have found this evening that the problem with the interface
disappearing was not infact related to the setting of a static ip. The
module for the interface: 8137too was not loaded at boot up because I
mistakely changed a setting in the bios and disabled the onboard lan. I
apologise for submitting this bug report and hope i have not caused
anyone to waste any time with it.
