Thanks for reporting this bug.
You mention using gnome, but you don't mention what version, but you
seem to be running stable.

Have you tried configuring the touchpad with:

gpointing-device-settings - configuration tool for pointing devices
tpconfig - touchpad device configuration utility
gsynaptics - configuration tool for pointing devices (transitional package)
