Depends on the version of the example script, I've increased the amount
of space made available to the /boot partition a couple of times.

It's currently 100mib.

In the jessie package, vmdebootstrap has an example script which only
uses 50m:

Tools like parted (or gparted) can resize partitions - the rootfs on
ext4 can be shrunk and the vfat could possibly be extended as this
would need to be done on a different machine to the BBB. The image
could also be recreated with a larger size for the boot partition. With
100MB I was able to upgrade the kernel but I don't have a BBB with me
currently, so I cannot verify.
