ath0 -> wlan0, not eth0 (as someone else pointed out).  Did you do
everything else in http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEeePC/HowTo/Upgrade ?
How do I check madwifi tools are remove or blacklisted?
I'll check the rest.
I will post my xorg.conf (don't have my eeePC here)

If I remove gdm by the mean of synaptic, does X/lxde will start by itself or do I need to put a startx somewhere?

I wouldn't reinstall.  I'd just work through these issues.  I'm sure it
won't take long for us to sort out.
