IIRC on my ThinkPad X60 brightness was managed in hardware as well, but
on recent kernels the corresponding keys should generate an X event.

Yeah, I found the same, but I did not test it.

What does "right" mean?

The config I reported is the one for the 904HD and 1000H models, full
stop.  However, I have not checked if Fn+F10 generates the same ACPI
code (or whatever X one) as Fn+F7 on previous models.

I have not checked the effects on the BIOS, sorry, and since I do not
have that machine anymore, I cannot do it anymore.

It does not by default, but it indeed does with the new ALSA version, as
