Hello,
I am using a debian kernel in which I have added builtin support for the
thermal control driver of my iMac (it does not work as a module). But
apart from this it is a 2.6.15 debian kernel. Interestingly, I later
managed to install a chroot in my home directory, while any previous or
further attempt to install it in /usr/local crashes the machine...

Thanks. I useed your chroot, but unfortunately I could not compile
a package from its sources.
root at sorbet:/# apt-get build-dep root
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
E: Build-dependencies for root could not be satisfied.
If I try anyway, I get the following error:
sh: dpkg-source: command not found
Unpack command 'dpkg-source -x root_5.09.01-7.dsc' failed.
Check if the 'dpkg-dev' package is installed.
E: Child process failed
and trying to install dpkg-dev is unsuccessful:
The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
dpkg-dev: Depends: perl5
Depends: perl-modules but it is not going to be install
E: Broken packages
Best,
