Okay, I'll try that it works with 2.59 and libtool-1.5

Which libelf versions are on these machines? Do you have a
"/usr/lib/pkgconfig/libelf.pc"?

On my 8.04.4 ubuntu, I have:

libtoolize (GNU libtool) 1.5.26
autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.61
automake (GNU automake) 1.10.1
lifelf 0.8.6

...and it works now.

At least someone was interested in autotools and I'm familiar with them,
so I stated with autotoole. Just ~4 hours of work.

I want to learn cmake, maybe I'll try a cmake port, too, but not now.
