I share some of the concerns about not using a fixed .orig tarball, and
instead, using the HEAD of a branch called upstream (or a tag).

However, it is really helpful to be able to git diff with upstream
sources,check contents of upstream files at various stages, directly
from withing the same working dir, to be able to create Debian patches,
for instance (backporting, etc.).

So having upstream sources somewhere in the same repo helps sometimes.
