let me refrase the question to:
why do i assume old software, written for old machines, will work on new
machines?
because in my experience this is true. i have a limited experience,
mostly with sparcstations and solaris/sunos. and the (admitedly not very
good) scheme scripts i wrote in the 80's still work in that environment.
imho it is better to keep the old version, than to archive the old
versions result.
however, while i do think it is better to have a live old version of a
language avaliable i admit that it is unneccessary to throw away the old
results if we do not keep the old version available.
