It looks like you don't have libsplashy and initramfs-tools installed.
Is this right?
/etc/init.d/splashy is supposed to turn off the cursor and turn it
back on before X starts. Something is out of order in your system, or
the script is doing some form of a race condition.
Can you verify that you have the right /etc/init.d/splashy script?
