Yeah, I think /lib/init/splashy/rw is a "unstable" (sid) thing. Ubuntu
Feisty doesn't have that either...
the second problem is that the progress bar doesn't load when I boot

Are you starting Splashy from initramfs?
Does /etc/rcS.d/S0*splashy exists? Whats the number?
Do you have a "steps" file in /lib/init/splashy/rw ?
