It's normal that when usplash reads "fail" it goes in verbose mode, so
it seems not be a real "usplash bug" but a problem with libraries or
maybe a problem with framebuffer device

Uhm... If you have time to spend on this, pleas do:

Try to set "vga=792" (without quotes) at /boot/grub/menu.lst at "kernel"
line, an you will get something like this:
kernel          /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10-5-686 root=/dev/hda2 ro quiet
splash vga=792

Than say me if you get errors.

If you don't get errors please install the libdirectfb and lib++dfb libs
(from http://kalatlug.nanofreesoft.org/Projects/usplash/libraries/ ) and
then (with vga=792 in menu.lst file already set) try to boot.
