Yes. you should check on the grub man page to look at a splash image.
(you cal also override the menu and say to grub to show the menu only if
a key is pushed)

In the beginning usplash worked as you said we had problems, but now
they seems solved, so the usplash-0.1 will work as you said:
sed will add vga=$init_res after "splash" text only on #nonaltoptions
line and the will run update-grub
