It sets fonts at boot time

does it mean that they were not installed and you installed it today?

This is what happens at my box (no error).
nb: you should do it not on a xshell but on one of the 6 virtual
terminals...
Does usplash works ok now?
Let me explain... usplash is not yet able to support verbose mode with
background.. when it reads the "fail" word, it exits and come back to
tty1... and your error is:
*Setting up general console font.... *t_kernel_font: Invalid argument
[fail]
(usplash exits not for the error itself but for the "fail" word)
this error is produced by /etc/init.d/console-screen.sh script... and it
seems to be produced by some pc when framebuffer support is enabled.
thanks for your time...
Live long and prosper
